The stage was set. The instruments were tuned. And one by one, 150 musicians took their places for what would become a historic moment in GJSO history.
This was our first performance at the brand-new Grand Junction High School Auditorium — and we didn’t know what to expect. Would the sound carry? Would the crowd come? Would the magic happen?
By the time the first notes filled the air, we had our answer. The community came out in full force — from across the Grand Valley and even the Front Range — to experience Beethoven’s Ninth like never before. Over 2,300 people joined us, making this our largest indoor concert ever. Through the support of our Gateway Initiative, more than 200 District 51 students and family members experienced their first live symphony.
And what a concert it was!
The hall was electric with anticipation as fourth grader Ellie Howard’s Crystal Baton-winning composition, Ellie’s Melody, premiered with tenderness and pride. And when the mighty chorus rose in Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” tears filled the eyes of many — onstage and off. For our conductor and countless musicians, this performance was more than a concert. It was a bucket-list moment. One that brought the audience to their feet with a standing ovation that was instant, enthusiastic, and unforgettable.
We are overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone who made it possible — and for the community who continues to remind us why live music matters.
