Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra Enriches through Musical Education
The Grand Valley’s largest arts organization brings 1200 students together from grades 3-5 to discover all the ways in which music moves.
On Thursday, May 5, 2022 the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra (GJSO) has arranged transportation and programming for 13 schools in District 51 to participate in the annual Carnegie Hall Link Up program. This year’s program is titled The Orchestra Moves, and is focused on utilizing educational presentations, hands-on activities, and an interactive performance between the student participants and members of the GJSO to discover all the interwoven ways in which the orchestra moves.
Each year, the GJSO and orchestras from around the world partner with Carnegie Hall’s Link Up program to provide an interactive curriculum in which students learn to play an instrument! This program helps students all over the country and around the world come together with their local orchestras to learn about, listen to, and perform great music. Carnegie Hall provides the Link Up curriculum guide and resources, while the orchestra arranges logistics for gathering professional musicians, conductor, and students together with soprano recorders for all participants, as necessary.
Educational programs provided by the Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra are aimed towards supporting the musical arts programs in schools throughout the Western Colorado and Eastern Utah communities. Additional GJSO programs include the GJSO Academy, a music lesson stipend program designed to help kids receive lessons from top musicians at an affordable rate; the Crystal Baton Composition Competition, a composition contest for elementary and middle school students; the Instrument Petting Zoo, a hands-on interactive program that teaches children about different instruments in the orchestra; and the annual Young Artist Competition, where the winner is a rising musician who receives a monetary prize and is invited to perform with the GJSO in a full-orchestral performance during a subscription concert.
It is a goal of the GJSO to expand reach for the Carnegie Hall Link Up program to surrounding school districts in the years to come. It is through the direct support of our community that we are able to reach such goals, and while this event is closed to the public, support for this and other GJSO educational programs can be offered in the form of volunteering, attendance at GJSO concerts, donations, and other such activities that can be found at gjso.org/support.
